MediGo is a startup company that enhances the patients user experience, specifically those with sleep apnea.

MediGo were looking to find out what users wanted when exploring their sleep apnea diagnosis. They identified a gap and wanted to know the best way to elevate the patients experience to ensure they stayed compliant.

I co-led a team of thirteen UX UI designers to assist MediGo with establishing a brand, identifying the user journey and pain-points of patients with a sleep apnea diagnosis and finally create an online platform where patients can get the help they need but don't have.

Project Scope

Develop a customer-facing online platform that will address user problems; and allow patients, GPs and medical equipment companies to easily interface with the MediGo Sleep Clinics, which are centred around Sleep Apnea

Problem Statement

People who experience, or have been diagnosed with, sleep apnea feel worried, overwhelmed and confused about how to manage their condition. Patients want a trusted, reliable, and supportive service that provides researched advice and guidance on managing their healthcare in a holistic manner

Research Methods

We conducted research methodologies to understand our users and listen to their pain-points when exploring their sleep apnea diagnosis.

  • Secondary Research
  • Competitor Analysis
  • User Interviews
  • Surveys
Key Insights
  • 1 in 7 adults worldwide are living with sleep apnea
  • An estimated 80% of people with sleep apnea remain undiagnosed
  • On average, the cost of a sleep study in Australia is approximately $500
  • Over 1 billion individuals worldwide experience some form of sleep apnea
  • Around 133,000 patients received a Medicare diagnostic sleep study in 2019. This represents a rate of 6.7 per 1,000 Australians aged 18 and over
  • CPAP is the most common treatment for sleep apnea

The Competition

ResMed - A global company dedicated to giving patients a healthier happier life and continues to provide digital solutions

Vitylsleep - Respiratory and Sleep Medical Practice in Western Victoria, providing care to patients with respiratory and sleep disorders

Manse Medical - A personalized patient-centric treatment clinic dedicated to helping you sleep easier and avoid sleep-related health concerns

Surveys

We sent out surveys on various social media platforms and family and friends to gain insights that helped us with our research

Survey Insights

Key Insights
  • 28% of patients were satisfied with the information provided about sleep apnea
  • Patients (that were compliant and sought treatment) felt cost of treatment was expensive
  • The CPAP machines trialed or bought were uncomfortable
  • Out of the survey results, 72% patients underwent treatment and 50% were satisfied with the end result

PIVOT

During our research, the team and I realised that we had to pivot our thought process and rather than focus on patients, allied health professionals and GP's together, we solely focused on patients due to the lack of support they received

  • GP's highlighted that patients require ongoing assistance to stay compliant with their sleep apnea diagnosis
  • Allied Health Professionals are not as involved with a patient's sleep apnea journey. Once alternative recommendations are made, it's up to the patient to stay disciplined
  • There are gaps in-between consultations with the GP, sleep test and Sleep Physician causing patients to be non-compliant. One factor being the wait periods between consults.

Personas

From our research, we came up with two persona's Paul Thomas who is a compliant sleep apnea patient and Karen Sutherland who is a non-compliant sleep apnea patient.

Ideation

We adopted ideation techniques such as 'Worst possible idea' where we wrote down things the personas would want using a collaboration tool (Miro). The ideas ranged from attainable to highly unattainable where we then worked on making it a realistic idea that benefited the user. We also conducted a crazy 8's session and finally constructed a storyboard

Crazy 8's

Storyboards

How might we ensure sleep apnea patients feel confident they have all the information they need pre and post-treatment through the utilisation of support services

Building and Testing

For the development of the prototype we designed with the help of

  • Information Architecture
  • User Flows
  • Wireframes
  • Prototype

Information Architecture

We conducted a card sort with the help of family and friends as as well as optimal workshop to gain a wider reach of users and participants.

User Flows

Compliant Users Scenario - The user was diagnosed with sleep apnea and referred to the MediGo Sleep Coach

Non-compliant Users Scenario- The user needs more information in order to feel confident before commencing treatment

Wireframes

We designed a patient-centric platform that integrates with Doctors and sleep coaches to effectively manage the patients treatment journey

Key Objective

To provide and information hub for users to self-educate and feel confident to begin treatment for a better quality of life

User Testing Results

Recommendations for MediGo

  • Notifications via email and/or SMS when CPAP machine is due for maintenance
  • Reminders about upcoming appointments and integration with calendar app's on mobile devices

Further Development

  • Mobile application linked to the patient portal
  • Integrate financing options on dashboard
  • GP & Sleep Physician dashboard integration

Other
